1. Yellow River State Forest: Nothing can come close to the invigorating effect a weekend in the great outdoors can have on you. If you like to camp, hike and fish, spend a weekend at Iowa’s Yellow River State Forest. The river there is full of huge trout from April to October, months when the temperatures in Iowa are practically perfect. If you decide to venture away from the river and fish in the marsh located in this forest, you may be able to catch a few bass. Even if you don’t get the chance to visit this location during the warmer months, you can still snowmobile and camp in this area and take advantage of the beautiful views of the Iowa countryside.

2. Loy’s Farm Bed and Breakfast: If you and your sweetheart are looking for a romantic weekend getaway without the kids, don’t cross Iowa off your list. This fun Iowa weekend vacation idea is perfect for couples that want to get away from their daily routine and reconnect with their significant others. Located in Marengo, this bed and breakfast will meet your expectations of rural charm.

3. Frank Llyod Wright Stockman House: Frank Llyod Wright is one of America’s best known architects for a reason. His expertise and genius allowed him to create stunning buildings and the Frank Lloyd Wright Stockman House is located in Mason City. One reason this attraction is perfect for a weekend getaway is because it is culturally enriching and it won’t take you long to get through the whole exhibit. You can take a tour of the house that marked a significant point in the career of this famous architect.

4. Iowa Valley Scenic Byway: Taking a road trip will always make for a fun Iowa weekend vacation. If you are near the Iowa River Valley, take a weekend to travel along the Iowa Valley Scenic Byway. One reason this byway is one of the best in the country is because of its exquisite natural, scenic, and cultural attractions. If you choose to take a trip here, make sure you visit the Armana Colonies. You will love the quaint atmosphere of these seven historic German villages that have been around for over 150 years.

5. The Villages of Van Buren: Life is simpler when you are out experiencing the Iowa countryside. When you visit the Villages of Van Buren, you will be surrounded by campgrounds, artifact museums, an old mill, and other activities to keep you busy. This destination is the perfect fun Iowa weekend vacation because you can live in the wilderness for a few days and then return back to your home of modern amenities in no time.

6. The Lewis and Clark Festival: The city of Onawa is in charge of the Lewis and Clark Festival every year. If you are looking for a fun weekend getaway to Iowa in the month of June, add this event to your list. Once you arrive at the festival you will be transported back to an age of log cabins and old fashioned American values. Characters at this festival wear traditional 1804 garb and the bluegrass music playing in the background will make you feel like you have taken a time machine back to the 17th century. While this is a fun event for any age, it is also highly educational.

7. Backbone State Park: For the part of you that loves rustic living and the other part that loves modern luxury, take a weekend vacation to Backbone State Park in Iowa. You will be enchanted by the beautiful views you encounter and the log cabins that dot this park. If you love hiking, swimming, backpacking, or any other outdoor activity but want to come home at the end of a day to a warm shower and comfortable bed, this state park is for you. All of the cabins located here have been renovated to include amenities such as air conditioning, heating, and running water.

8. Iowa State Fair: You have probably been to a fair hosted by your county or state in the past, but they probably don’t compare to the Iowa State Fair. As one of the biggest state fairs in the United States, it makes for a fun Iowa weekend vacation. The event takes place in the month of August so if you are dreading your kids going back to school or you just need an end of summer vacation, go to Iowa and be one of over million people that attends this fair annually. As one of the largest fairs in the country, you won’t want to stay for just one evening. Bring your tent and camp out in the campground nearby so you can experience all this fair has to offer.
